Methodology
Contracts & grants. Queried from the USAspending.gov v2 API: spending_by_category (recipient, awarding agency, NAICS/CFDA), spending_by_geography (place-of-performance state) and spending_by_award (top 40 awards per state by amount) for action dates in the last 30 days. Contracts = award types A–D; grants = 02–05. Amounts are obligations as published, including negative modifications.
Lobbying. The most recently posted filings for the current year from the Senate LDA REST API (most recent 200 filings). Counts reflect filings, not distinct lobbying engagements. Income/expenses are taken from the filing as reported.
Opportunities. Downloaded each day from the SAM.gov Data Services public Contract Opportunities extract (ContractOpportunitiesFullCSV.csv; no API key required), which GSA regenerates daily. Only notices marked Active are kept (all of them, not a sample). Fields used: title, notice ID, solicitation number, agency path (department / sub-tier / office), notice type, posted date, response deadline, set-aside, NAICS code and place-of-performance state; each row links to the official sam.gov/opp/<notice ID>/view page. "Open" means the response deadline is today or later; notices with no deadline or a passed deadline are still shown, after open ones. Place-of-performance state is blank for many notices in the source; those appear only in the by-type lists. If the file download fails, the pipeline falls back to the SAM.gov Opportunities API (recent notices only) or keeps the previous day's data. Current file date: 2026-10-22T22:30-05:00.
Refresh. Pipeline runs fetch → build; requests are paced (≥1 s USAspending, 5 s anonymous LDA) and retried on rate limits; the SAM.gov file is a single streamed download. The pipeline runs every morning. Last fetch: 2026-10-21T17:01.
Limitations. Data are as reported by filers and agencies and may be revised; always verify against the original record linked on each row. No editorial judgments are made.
